Jacob Lawrence (1917–2000) The paintings of Jacob Lawrence express his lifelong concern for human dignity and freedom, and his own social consciousness. Interested in the history, accomplishments, and struggles of black people, Lawrence often painted in a series to tell the epic stories of American History. In this four-day workshop, we’ll look at the works of Jacob Lawrence, and focus on “American Struggle: From the History of the American People.” In this landmark series, he not only revived the struggles of the founding fathers, but also viewed early American history from the perspective of the marginalized. We’ll do a deep dive into his series painting and create our own response to certain periods in American’s history —and create a piece that is a response to the current political climate.
