Portraits that have the greatest impact on the viewer are expressive ones, those that evoke feeling. Artists seek to represent the character and psychology of their sitters; similarly, in their self-portraits, they aim to communicate something of their innermost selves. This week, we’ll look at a select group of provocative artists that broke with the formal traditions of the past, making innovations that would radically alter the genre of portraiture. We’ll discover how to bring the expressive portrait to life using light, color, and painterly technique.
Tuesday July 6 - Friday July 9
9:00am - 1:00pm
A few of the artists we’ll explore during this 5 day session: Elaine DeKooning, Alice Neel, Amy Sherald, Mickalene Thomas, Kehinde Wiley, Barkley Hendricks, Elizabeth Peyton
