Summer - Know van Gogh
Well, our families have been asking for it so here it is! And really, who could ever tire of the Great One?
It seems our artists can’t get enough of the red-haired wonder, and we couldn’t get by this summer without saving the best for last…Vincent!
He was born 172 years ago but his compelling life captivates us to this day. Vincent van Gogh is now known as the one of the most famous tortured artists in history (if not THE most famous. He remains in the news... recording breaking sales of his work, hidden under-paintings, NEW paintings (found just a few months ago), frauds, new biographies, and movies. It's hard to think of an artist who is as beloved as Van Gogh. His paintings are so immediate and honest. Learning more about who the man was behind these masterpieces will help us connect to them even more. We'll look at his life, discover his techniques and explore new theories on one ofthe most fascinating lives in the history of art.

Summer - Magical Beings: The Art of Terry McCue
Canadian artist Terry McCue was a self-taught Ojibwa painter who spent much his life in First Nations communities, and his connection to them is clear in his work. He is known for large, distinctive, bold works painting the natural world. The animals in his paintings seem almost human and eerily evoke ancestral blurring of the boundaries between human and animal worlds.
We’ll learn about Terry’s influences and paint with his particular perspective in mind.

Summer - Pop Star Portraits: Expressive Contemporary Portraiture (Ages 12+)
Portraits that have the greatest impact on the viewer are expressive ones, those that evoke feeling. Artists seek to represent the character and psychology of their sitters. We'll we paint our favorite pop stars in the style of those provocative artists that broke with the formal portrait traditions of the past. Think Sabrina à la Elizabeth Peyton or Cowboy Carter in the style of Mickelene Thomas!
We’ll discover how to bring the expressive portrait to life using light, color, and painterly technique.
Just a few of the artists we’ll explore during this session: Alice Neel, Amy Sherald, David Hockney, Mickelene Thomas, Francesco Clemente, Kehinde Wiley, Barkley Hendricks, and Elizabeth Peyton.

Summer - The Wild Bunch: The Post-Impressionists!
The term was first used in 1910 by the English art critic Roger Fry who needed a word to describe the group of artists including Paul Gauguin, Paul Cezanne, Georges Seurat, and you guessed it, Vincent Van Gogh.
While French eyes would have been used to these revolutionary artists, to English audiences, they were absolutely radical!! Simply put, Post-Impressionism is a natural extension of Impressionism, borrowing certain elements but embracing more artistic and WILD possibilities than Impressionism ever did.
We’ll explore the world of these brilliant pioneers and paint a few masterpieces of our own.
