Jacob Lawrence - American Story Teller (Ages 8-12)

Jacob Lawrence was a painter, storyteller, and teacher. He told stories about the lives of African Americans by painting pictures of the people and places he saw every day. He also painted series of famous people and scenes from history. Using simple shapes, colors, and outlines, Lawrence became a leading modernist painter of the 20th century - and one of the few Black artists of his time to gain broad recognition in the art world. We’ll look at America through Jacob’s eyes and explore the art of series paintings.

Jacob Lawrence - American Struggle (Ages 12-16)

Jacob Lawrence (1917–2000) The paintings of Jacob Lawrence express his lifelong concern for human dignity and freedom, and his own social consciousness. Interested in the history, accomplishments, and struggles of black people, Lawrence often painted in a series to tell the epic stories of American History. In this four-day workshop, we’ll look at the works of Jacob Lawrence, and focus on “American Struggle: From the History of the American People.” In this landmark series, he not only revived the struggles of the founding fathers, but also viewed early American history from the perspective of the marginalized. We’ll do a deep dive into his series painting and create our own response to certain periods in American’s history —and create a piece that is a response to the current political climate.

ARTNote: Whether your artist is planning on a Jacob Lawrence workshop or not, please consider going to see the exhibition, “Jacob Lawrence: The American Struggle” on now through May 23 at the Seattle Art Museum

Keeping the Faith: Sunny Paintings/Brighter Days (4 Days)

It can be hard to stay positive in challenging times, and certainly that was no different for artists throughout history. Yet, they created (and continue to create) work that can stop us in our tracks, and make us feel —joy! For this special four-day intensive, we’ll surround ourselves with the things we love: paintbrushes, music, and of course, art. We’ll immerse ourselves in awe-inspiring, mischievous, colorful, kooky, and yes, joyful art! Four days of painting is four days of L-O-V-E.

ARTNote: A few of the artists we’ll explore during this 4-day session: Frans Hals, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Van Gogh, Matisse, O’Keeffe, Chagall, Picasso, Kusama, Murakami, Botero, Thiebaud, Faith Ringgold, and many more.

Know Van Gogh

He was born 160 years ago but his compelling life captivates us to this day. Vincent van Gogh is now known as the one of the most famous ‘tortured artists’ in history (if not THE most famous). He remains in the news... recording breaking sales of his work, hidden under-paintings, frauds, new biographies etc. It’s hard to think of an artist who is as beloved as Van Gogh. His paintings are so immediate and honest. Learning more about who the man was behind these masterpieces will help us connect to them even more. We’ll look at his life, discover his techniques and explore new theories on one of the most fascinating lives in the history of art.

Expressive Contemporary Portraiture (Ages 12-16)

Portraits that have the greatest impact on the viewer are expressive ones, those that evoke feeling. Artists seek to represent the character and psychology of their sitters; similarly, in their self-portraits, they aim to communicate something of their innermost selves. This week, we’ll look at a select group of provocative artists that broke with the formal traditions of the past, making innovations that would radically alter the genre of portraiture. We’ll discover how to bring the expressive portrait to life using light, color, and painterly technique.

ARTNote: A few of the artists we’ll explore during this 4 day session: Alice Neel, Elaine de Kooning, Amy Sherald, Mickalene Thomas, Kehinde Wiley, Barkley Hendricks, Elizabeth Peyton

Monet at Étretat

In celebration of Seattle Art Museum’s summer exhibition,“Monet at Étretat,” we’ll look our favorite titan of art and his obsession with the famous cliffs. Painted over EIGHTY times, he always found a different perspective, whether it was near or far, above or below; in winter or summer, rain or shine. Unmatched in his brilliant understanding of light and color, the series is among the milestones of Impressionism and Western landscape painting.

In this two-day workshop, paint in the style of Monet and the other artists who set up their easels on this famous shoreline (Van Gogh, Courbet, Loiseau, and Matisse) and create our own masterpiece.
